The Effects of Sugar on the Human Body

Who Doesn’t Love Sugar?

We’re all born liking the taste.  Our earliest ancestors ate sweet fruits as a significant part of their diet.  Honey has always been a treasured find and was one of our earliest sweets.  Native Americans were making maple syrup thousands of years ago in the northeastern part of North America. Sugar cane was cultivated 4,000 years ago in South East Asia and is still Thailand’s most important crop. By the 1500s sugar was being produced on the Caribbean islands and exported around the world.  However, it is doubtful that people knew the effects that sugar has on the human body in the future.  Today the global consumption of sugar is 176 million metric tons (194 million US tons).

What Does Sugar Really Do to Your Body?

For decades our parents, teachers, and dentists have been (accurately) telling us that sugar ‘will rot your teeth’.  A great amount of research has been done on the health effects of eating sugar and the evidence is now clear.  This sweet food can harm us in many other, more serious ways.  The link I have included will take you to a Tedtalk which describes the effects of sugar on the human body, including the correlation between sugar and diabetes.  It is surprising, educational, and I believe, a worthwhile investment of time. I hope you do too.

3 Small Steps to Help You Feel Your Best!

Jody Stanislaw provides 3 small suggestions to help you have more energy.

1 – Have protein for breakfast such as eggs nuts, cottage cheese, or sliced apple with peanut butter.

2 – If you are hungry during the day, try water first.

3 – Find low-sugar replacements for high-carb foods.  Try things like replacing zucchini noodles for pasta, get cauliflower pizza dough, and using almond flour instead of regular flour.
