Why Do We Celebrate Earth Day?

Happy Earth Day!

April 22nd is Earth Day.  This is a time to celebrate the progress we’ve made helping our environment. Above all, it is a day to renew our commitment to do more.

The first Earth Day took place in 1970, as a way to call attention to the harm humans were causing the environment.  At that time, people started to realize that the rate at which we were polluting our air and water had an impact on all life, including our own.  The Earth, we realized, was finite.

Within a year, the Environmental Protection Agency was formed.  Additionally, two years later, the Clean Air and Clean Water acts were greatly strengthened.  This was a serious movement, and it was succeeding.  The Earth Day Network is a group that coordinates activities around the globe for this special day.  Their priorities in 2019 are climate change, plastic pollution, and endangered species.

On this day, reflect on the good things you already do to reduce your impact on the environment.  Then, learn what more you can do and commit yourself to those goals.  A great place to learn more is at  www.earthday.org.

Working together, we can do great things!
